Washington Appellate Attorney — Civil and Criminal Appeals
Northman Legal handles civil and criminal appeals at every level of Washington's court system — the Washington Court of Appeals (Divisions I, II, and III), the Washington Supreme Court, and the 9th Circuit. I've handled more than 100 appeals over six years, including published opinions resulting in the reversal of criminal convictions and a remand after attorneys' fees were improperly diminished at trial.

The appeal deadline is approaching and your client needs an experienced appellate lawyer. Whether you want to hand off the appeal entirely or bring in appellate co-counsel while staying on the case, Northman Legal can work either way. Flat fees for most appeals. Referral conversations are always free.
Losing at trial isn't the end. Washington appellate courts review the record for legal errors — not just the outcome. If you believe the trial court got it wrong, the first step is an honest assessment of what the record shows. I'll tell you directly whether an appeal is worth pursuing.
Civil appeals — including attorneys' fees appeals — are a core part of what Northman Legal handles. I've briefed cases at all three divisions of the Washington Court of Appeals and in the 9th Circuit, and can work on an hourly basis ($200/hr) or flat fee depending on the matter.
Three Ways To Work Together
Lead Appellate Attorney
I take the case from filing through final decision. You or your client are kept informed at each stage, but I handle the record, the brief, and oral argument.
-
Notice of appeal and all RAP deadlines
-
Full record review and issue identification
-
Briefing — opening, response, and/or reply brief
-
Oral argument at the Washington Court of Appeals, Supreme Court, or 9th Circuit
Best for: Individuals who need full representation; trial attorneys who want to refer the appeal entirely
Brief Writer
You stay as counsel of record. I draft the appellate brief — pulling the strongest issues from the trial record and framing them for the standard of review that applies.
-
Issue spotting from the cold record
-
Full draft of opening, response, and/or reply brief
-
Optional: oral argument preparation
Best for: Trial attorneys who want to stay involved but need appellate drafting expertise
Appellate Co-Counsel
We work the appeal together. You handle the client relationship; I handle the appellate strategy and writing. This works well when the trial attorney knows the case best and wants to stay on.
-
Collaborative strategy session at the outset
-
Shared brief drafting or full brief by Northman Legal
-
Joint appearance for oral argument if appropriate
Best for: Trial attorneys with an active client relationship who want appellate backup
Washington Practice Note
Under RAP 5.2, a party generally has 30 days from entry of the final judgment or order they want reviewed, to file a notice of appeal in Washington state. Missing this deadline almost always forfeits the right to appeal. If you received an adverse ruling and are considering an appeal, the first question is always: when does the notice of appeal need to be filed?
